17 “Keep Your Heart With All Diligence”
✨ Lesson 17: “Keep Your Heart With All Diligence”
Governing the Mind as Our Essential Role in Character Formation
“Character development is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings.”
— Education, p. 225
Welcome to Lesson 17 in your From Glory to Glory journey. In this soul-searching and foundational session, Pastor Wallace shifts the spotlight from what God has done for us, to what we must now do in cooperation with Him. The focus? Learning to “keep the heart with all diligence”—to actively and intentionally govern the activity of our thoughts and feelings.
While transformation is always the work of the Holy Spirit, it is not a passive experience. As Pastor Wallace makes clear, we are not mere spectators in the process of sanctification. We have an essential, active, cooperative role to play. That role centers on the heart—not merely the physical organ, but the seat of our thoughts, feelings, motives, and character. To “keep the heart” is to take spiritual responsibility for what happens in the privacy of our minds, for “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
This lesson marks a critical turning point in our study: from admiring the gospel’s beauty to embodying its power. We learn that external behavior—even seemingly good actions—can mask selfish motives if the inner life is not under Christ’s rule. This is not about behavior modification; it’s about heart renovation. And God’s Word calls us to set a double guard on our thoughts and feelings, because our character, and ultimately our destiny, flow from them.
As you engage with this lesson, prepare for deep conviction, but also deep hope. We can’t do it alone—but we’re not asked to. God’s grace, combined with diligent, love-driven effort, makes it possible to bring every thought into captivity to Christ. The sealing of our character—the engraving of God’s law onto our hearts—is only possible as we yield our minds to the Spirit of Truth, day by day.
